The marquee carried the name: Essence — Black Women in Sports. Inside, the room was draped in warm orange, screens ran the honorees' stories on a loop, and a stage at one end took the panels and the speeches.
Coca-Cola took the step-and-repeat, the kitchen ran a full menu off the patio, and the bar poured through the afternoon. It is the case for the location as much as the room: on the busiest sports weekend the city has ever had, guests were minutes from the stadium instead of an hour across town.
